Every quarter, all classes share the same book with students, known as the Book of the Quarter (BOQ). With all students and adults on campus reading the same book, a strong sense of community is built, as we all have the common frame of reference for discussion. It also sends a strong message about the importance of reading, no matter what the subject area.

As the second quarter winds down, we offer a preview of our BOQ for the third quarter: GRIT & Bear It! by Tamara Zentic, M.S.

GRIT stands for Generating Relentless Inner Toughness, and this book helps children to persevere in the midst of a challenge. Here are a few tips from the book to help your child develop GRIT:

  • Start when children are young.
  • Children need to believe that through hard work, they can get better.
  • Applaud effort as well as the end result.
  • Help children see their mistakes and failures as opportunities to progress.
  • Set a good example and work together--your own work ethic speaks volumes to children about your own GRIT!
