This week we received Korean pears as our Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program snack.

Pyrus pyrifolia is native to East Asia and is known by many different names, such as Asian pear, Chinese pear, Korean pear, Japanese pear, Taiwanese pear, sand pear, and nashi pear. Despite its Asian beginnings, this pear is also cultivated in India, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. These pears are different from the European pears because they are more crisp and grainy; their texture does not lend themselves to be made into pies or jam. Instead, they are served raw and peeled. These pears' flowers are a symbol of early spring and are seen throughout the countryside. The fruit are very large and fragrant, and they can last for several weeks in a cold, dry place if wrapped carefully.
