For our FFV Program snacks this week, we had a kiwifruit & grape combo, as well as a broccoli and carrots combo!

Kiwifruit, also known by its shortened name, kiwi, or by the longer name Chinese gooseberry, is an oval fruit about the size of a hen's egg. It has a dull brown skin and bright green flesh with rows of tiny, edible, black seeds. Kiwifruit is rich in vitamins C and K, and good source of fiber and vitamin E.

Broccoli is in the cabbage family. Raw broccoli is an excellent source of vitamins C and K, and also contains moderate amounts of several B vitamins and manganese. Boiling broccoli reduces some of its nutrients, but other preparation methods, such as steaming, microwaving, and stir-frying has no significant effect on the loss of nutrients.

We think of carrots being orange, but do you know that they also come in other colors, such as purple, black, red, white, and yellow? Carrots get their orange color from the carotene in them, and if you consume excessive amounts of carrots, over a period of time, your skin will start to yellow, caused by the build up of these carotenes. Carrots are also a good source of vitamins K and B6.
