Kindergarten went on a field trip to Ka'ala Farms. They learned about the kalo and got to help take out weeds in the lo'i. They watched a demonstration on making pa'i'ai which they got to sample. The students got to see how Hawaiians used leaves not only for shelter, but also to cook and to make baskets and bracelets. They also saw how coconuts were used to make cups and bowls. This helped the kindergarteners to see that Hawaiians were resourceful and got everything they needed to survive from the land: food, water, shelter, clothing, and medicine.
