Meet our new principal, Mrs. Rebecca Gebreyesus.

Here is her letter:

Aloha Leihoku ‘Ohana,

It is with great pleasure that I write this letter to you as the incoming principal of Leihoku Elementary School. I’m so honored to join the Leihoku ‘Ohana and community. Having worked in this community for 20 years, I know Leihoku’s reputation for excellence, I know what a special place it is, and I am so excited to join this wonderful team.

I come to you with 20 years of experience as an educator - as a classroom teacher, a new teacher mentor, and as a vice-principal, but in addition to my role as an educator, I am also a wife and dog mom. When not at work, my husband Dawit and I are busy spoiling our chocolate lab Lucy and doing yard work at our home in Makaha Valley. I look forward to getting to know all of your families as you get to know me.

As part of my transition into Leihoku, I will be taking some time to get to know our buildings, our community and familiarizing myself with the strengths and needs of our school. I am passionate about the success of our students and our families, and I recognize that the success of Leihoku contributes to the success of our community as a whole. Ultimately, it takes all stakeholders - school, family and community working together for the best interest of our students to make the biggest positive impact.

I am truly honored to be given this opportunity and look forward to immersing myself completely in our school and community. I believe my main responsibility is to put our teachers in the best possible position to succeed, as they put our students in the best possible position to succeed.

In closing, please know that my door is always open to you, I heartily welcome your conversations and input throughout this year. Let us always keep our students the primary focus of our work. I look forward to celebrating our collective successes during the remainder of this 2023-2024 school year.

Aloha No,

Rebecca K. Gebreyesus
